Space optimization in Interiors is the designing process of using the available space into most usable, effective and importantly fulfilling the requirements. Its an art and can be obtained from experience. The designer must be very clear on (1) The available space (2) The client Requirement (3) Details of Space saving furniture and accessories (4) space saving techniques
When optimizing the space, the designer should break the standard dimensional rules where ever required and keep standards only where it is mandatory. When calculating Space you must be clear on all dimensions like the length, height , depth , thickness , etc., because certain places where you don’t have a height may be optimized using depth and vis versa.
Why do we need to optimize the space ? it is only when the client requirements are more and the available space is less. So, gathering requirement from the client is more important and you may suggest various options and / or accessories to fulfil their requirement. When gathering requirements, do remember to get all the dimensional details , colour, operations , usage ( frequent / non frequent ) tradition etc.,
Before designing you must have the details of space saving furniture and accessories in the market. Placing the space saving furniture or accessories where necessary and ensure that it goes inline with your designs. It is mandatory know, how heavy or tall or smooth the furniture or accessory , so that your recommendation to the client will be good. It is also good to use space saving furniture or accessory which is visible or open to the client’s usage because few furniture and accessories or hidden and hard to understand how it works.
Space saving techniques are like placement , shelving, increase height or depth, break the standards, Dig inside, sliding options, coverable options, movable shelving options, vertical horizontal proportioning etc.,
